Dr Simamkele Hela is a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a keen interest in high-risk obstetrics and minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.

He has established his private practice at Mediclinic Sandton, where he offers comprehensive care in general obstetrics and gynaecology, including laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures, family planning, and management of complex pregnancies.

Born in the Eastern Cape and raised in economically challenging circumstances, Dr Hela’s path to medicine was shaped by personal loss and early inspiration. Both his parents died from HIV-related illness while he was still a teenager, an experience that instilled in him a strong desire to heal others. He was taken in by his maternal aunt, a midwife, whose work sparked his early fascination with childbirth and women’s health.

Dr Hela completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine (University of KwaZulu-Natal) in 2012. He went on to complete his Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa (FCOG) in 2023, followed by a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through Wits University in 2024. His master’s research focused on connective tissue diseases in pregnancy.

After completing his internship and community service at Stanger Provincial Hospital and Sundumbili Community Health Centre, he gained broad-based clinical experience as a medical officer in several institutions, including Stanger Provincial Hospital, Tembisa Tertiary Hospital, and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He began his specialist training at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in 2019, later serving as a consultant and lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Wits University.

During his tenure at Baragwanath, Dr Hela was a member of the Placenta Accreta Team Unit, managing life-threatening obstetric complications in high-risk pregnancies. He also contributed to registrar training and academic development, helping coordinate postgraduate teaching programmes.

Clinically, he is passionate about the dual aspects of his field: the joy and fulfilment of supporting healthy pregnancies and deliveries, and the challenge of navigating high-stakes, high-risk obstetric cases. He is also a strong proponent of minimally invasive surgical techniques, which form the backbone of his approach to gynaecological care.

Dr Hela hopes to further sub-specialise in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, deepening his expertise in complex pregnancy care.

Outside of medicine, he is a devoted husband and father of two young boys. He enjoys boxing, gym, reading, and travelling, especially when it allows him to recharge and spend quality time with his family.

With a unique blend of technical skill, clinical insight, and personal empathy, Dr Hela brings a thoughtful and holistic approach to women’s health. Through his practice at Mediclinic Sandton, he continues to pursue his lifelong goal of making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
